
Slackware Linux is the oldest surviving linux distribution. It has been around since 1993.

Fedora Core is a free linux distribution that is sponsored by RedHat, a leader in commercial enterprise-level linux.


Debian is more than just an OS...it's an entire system. There are thousands of packages to choose from, and with debian's commitment to security and stability, you can't go wrong.






Ubuntu was originally derived from debian linux. Today, it is a distribution in its own right, and is touted by some as the most popular linux distribution available, due to its ease of use and safeguards for those who may not know everything about what they are doing. An excellent choice for beginners in linux. It comes in many variations including Kubuntu, which uses the KDE desktop instead of the Gnome desktop used in standard Ubuntu, and there is also Xubuntu which uses the XFCE desktop, which is a nice lightweight choice for older computers. There is also edubuntu, which is intended for learning environments, and is full of wonderful software for the small ones running around in your house. There is also Gobuntu, which strives to make a functioning desktop that is completely free, meaning that all of the source is free to use, modify and redistribute. There is also Ubuntu Studio, which has a great selection of multimedia authoring software included.



CentOS is an enterprise linux solution that is free. They take the freely available Red Hat Server Enterprise Linux source code, remove all of the branding from it, and release it. It is absolutely free. However, if you are wanting an enterprise solution that comes with support, you might want to give RedHat a try.

Mandriva Linux is the result of the combination of Mandrake Linux and Connectiva Linux. It has much to offer in the way of options when purchasing, and as always everything is freely available to download as well.

Gentoo is a linux distribution for the power user. Everything may be custom built, and can be compiled at any level of optimization. You can make it a generic linux, or you can make it specifically for the machine in which you are sitting at. The choice is yours.

Knoppix is mainly a Live CD version of linux with many power tools available for linux on the go. Knoppix may also be installed onto the hard disk from the live CD should you choose to do so.

ELiveCD is a linux originally intended to run as a Live CD, but it can also be installed onto the hard drive. It uses the fast, efficient Enlightenment window manager, which enables it to be run on as little as a 300mhz cpu with 64mb of ram, with full graphical.
